K.D. Edenfield has seen some interest from college football recruiters and the rising senior will try and increase his stock in the baseball realm next week as a member of the South squad during the 13th Annual Alabama All-Star Sports Week in Huntsville.

Charles Henderson’s quarterback and right fielder will get his chance to show what he can do on the baseball diamond.

“I was excited and surprised because I thought (teammate) Mitch (McLeod) would make it because he had a pretty good year, but I am looking forward to it,” Edenfield said.

Edenfield said it is an honor to play in the baseball game, but as far as college goes he is more focused on latching on somewhere on the gridiron.

“I would like to play football (in college), but I am also considering baseball,” he said.

CHHS head baseball coach Derek Irons said Edenfield is an extremely versatile player.

“K.D. is just a tremendous athlete,” Irons said. “He plays quarterback for the football team and does a great job there. He played right field for us most of the year and does a great job in the outfield. He has a very strong arm and he gets good reads on the ball.”

But Edenfield was more than a great defender for the Trojans last year.

“He batted in the two-spot for us and could do whatever we needed,” Irons said. “I think he led the team in sacrifice bunts which is what you need from your No. 2 hole guy, but then he also hit a few home runs. He was the kind of guy that whatever we needed he could do it. He just has a lot of tools.”

Irons said Edenfield has something that cannot be measured by how long he hits the ball or how much ground he covers to get a fly ball.

“He was a junior last year, but for a junior he had a pretty big leadership role,” Irons said. “I think he will have an even bigger role this year as a senior. He is a vocal guy. He doesn’t mind getting the team together when we are slow to get going and he is a guy who leads with his actions. And that is what gets respect from teammates. He is not going to ask you to hustle if he is not going to hustle himself.”

Edenfield also believes his ability to accomplish many things on the baseball field got him on the South squad.

“I wasn’t really spectacular at one thing, but I just did pretty good at everything,” Edenfield said.

Joining Edenfield in Huntsville will be fellow rising baseball senior Chance Shaver, graduated football senior Zeb Swindall, rising softball senior Taylor Smartt and rising soccer senior Douglas McLendon.

“Chance is a really good player and it feels good to be going up there with him on the same team,” Edenfield said. “And it feels real good to have six people up there and all of them are in our class except Zeb.”

The baseball doubleheader begins at 4 p.m. July 13 and will be played at Joe Davis Stadium, which is the home of the AA Huntsville Stars of the Milwaukee Brewers organization.
