It’s still only July, but it’ll be time to head back to school before long.

That’s why the Pike County Chamber of Commerce and local businesses will soon be gearing up to make that trip a little easier on parent’s pockets.

The sales tax free weekend will be held Aug. 7-9, to give Alabama shoppers a chance to get their back-to-school gear at a lower price.

While this is a statewide effort, some local governments may not be participating in the sales tax holiday, but Pike County businesses are.

The taxes will be lifted on certain items during those days.

“Alabamians deserve this break from sales taxes. This tax-free weekend not only helps people save some money, it gives our retailers a boost and that helps our economy,” said Gov. Bob Riley.

Pike County Chamber of Commerce President Jenniffer Barner said this event is important to local business, even though it doesn’t give sales tax support.

“We talk all the time about spending money in Pike County because it supports your tax base,” Barner said. “Even though the weekend is tax free, spending your money here will still support the local businesses.”

Barner said Pike County stores offer everything parents need for back to school.

“We have everything available in Pike County that you will need for back to school from school supplies to school clothes and uniforms to computers,” Barner said. “Take advantage of knowing right where to go, close to home and not go elsewhere to spend your money and buy gas and support other communities.”
