Douglas McLendon will get his shot to represent Charles Henderson next week when the rising soccer senior plays in the North-South game during the 13th Annual Alabama All-Star Sports Week in Huntsville.

“It feels great to get to play in this game and I am really honored,” McLendon said. “I just wish more of the guys from the team could have made it because I would not be here if not for them.”

McLendon and the Trojans hosted the first playoff game in Charles Henderson soccer history last year and McLendon believes his leadership on the soccer field is what got him selected to play in the all-star game.

“I think I got selected because of how our team worked together this year,” McLendon said. “I guess since I was one of the captains of the team they kind of looked to me and I just feel like we played great together and I guess maybe they saw some leadership.”

No matter why he was selected, McLendon is ready to go north and have a good time during the all-star week.

“I am always looking to be better and I hope I can learn some stuff up there to help me out,” he said. “But going up there, I want to represent the city well and represent my team too.”

Playing in front of college scouts is not something that bothers McLendon a whole lot.

“I would love to play college and it has been a dream of mine to play college soccer,” he said. “I want to try and go as far as I can, but if not that is OK too.”

McLendon will not be the only Trojan in Huntsville for the all-star week. Four other athletes across all sports will join him in the Rocket City.

Graduated senior Zeb Swindall will play for the South in the football game, rising senior Taylor Smartt will play in the softball game and rising seniors K.D. Edenfield and Chance Shaver will be on the South squad for the baseball game. McLendon’s soccer teammate Lloyd Shillabeer was selected, but he will not be able to play in the game.

“It is great and I am proud of all those that made it up there,” McLendon said. “I wish I could go see them play, but I will be at a camp in Tennessee right after our game, but I wish them all the best of luck.”

The boys’ soccer game begins at 7 p.m. July 14.
