The showers of blessings came just in time to give a boost to the produce bound for the market on Pioneer Market Day, Saturday, July 11.

Pam Sanders, Pioneer Farmers Market manager, said that even with dry conditions, the market has been a great success so far this season. In celebration, of the season, the market will host Pioneer Market Day on Saturday and a full morning of activities has been planned.

“We will have the largest number of producers that we’ve had so far this season,” she said. “With the recent rains, we should have an abundance of produce available. And, we are inviting others who have farm-related items, homemade or homegrown, to participate.”

Baked goods always sell quickly and items such as handmade aprons and kitchen towels and cookbooks are popular among shoppers. Plants are also in demand, especially cuttings from heirloom plants.

“There will be no charge for a booth, and we’ll have tents and tables available on a limited basis,” Sanders said. “We just want people to come out and display and sell items that support the farmer’s market. Those who would like a booth need to make reservations by calling 334-243-5933 as soon as possible.

In addition to farm fresh produce at great prices, Pioneer Market Day will feature wagon rides for the young and young at heart and the Water Conservation League will have kids’ activities.

Grover Poole will man the farm implement display and be available to answer any questions about how farming used to be done.

The Pike County Extension Office will have food preservation information available and will also have someone available who can give expert advice on what to do and what not to do when preserving the summer harvest for fall consumption.

“Pioneer Market Day will be a fun event from the entire family,” Sanders said. “So we invite everyone to participate with a booth or by shopping local and buying fresh.”
