This is a busy time for the members of the Pike Animal Shelter.

Right in the midst of the Shelter’s membership campaign is the spring 2009 Bow Wow Pow Wow from 1 until 3 p.m. Saturday, June 27 at Murphree Park in Troy.

Even though there’s a lot going on, Donna Schubert, Founders Society chair, said all the time and effort put into both the membership drive and the Bow Wow Pow Wow adoption event are more than worthwhile.

“Even though Pike Animal Shelter memberships are available throughout the year, we have initiated our first ever mailing to people on our mailing list outlining the importance of membership,” Schubert said. “Memberships date a year from the time you join and membership shows that you are committed to building a modern and professional shelter in our community.”

Memberships in the Pike Animal Shelter/Troy Animal Shelter Coalition are $25 for adults and $15 for those 12 and under.

“If that seems a little high, we compare membership to a subscription in a quality magazine,” Schubert said.

Those who attend the Bow Wow Pow Wow on Saturday will have an opportunity to learn more about the Pike Animal Shelter/Troy Animal Shelter Coalition and also have an opportunity to adopt some really great dogs.

“Right now, we’re not sure exactly how many dogs will be available for adoption because there’s a possibility that some of the dogs at the Troy Animal Shelter could be adopted before Saturday,” Schubert said. “But probably around 10. We know that we will have a litter of puppies available and several family companions that have been released but will make good family pets.”

One of those recently released adult dogs is a “sweet,” mixed dog named Louise.

“She will make a wonderful pet for a family that has a secure fence,” Schubert said.

“She’s really domesticated. She will sit at your feet and love you all over. And, Louise has already been spaded.”

Those who adopt a shelter dog must sign an agreement that they will have their dogs spayed or neutered.

“The spay and neuter agreement is per state law,” Schubert said.

“We don’t charge an adoption fee but we do have an animal control officer on the premises who will ask those who are considering adoption to provide screening information.

“This information helps determine whether the family and the dog will be a good match. We are looking for forever homes for these very deserving animals.”

Schubert said the number of dogs that have been adopted through the Pike Animal Shelter’s efforts is more than 50.

“We’ve had many successful adoptions and one that comes to mind is the adoption of Gator by Melanie Hanlon and Chris Marusich who will be married on Saturday,” Schubert said.

“Gator was the beloved dog of an older gentleman who could no longer care for him. Melanie and Chris fell in love with Gator and have built a fence for him as well as a doghouse that matches their own home.”

There are more successful adoption stories waiting to be told.
