Youth prevailed for the Troy American Legion Post 70 Trojans Monday night.

The equivalent of the JV squad for Troy beat Enterprise 9-8 in game one of a doubleheader and the “varsity” Trojans lost 4-3 in Riddle-Pace Field.

Troy came from behind for the win in game one.

“We came out sluggish and made some costly errors, but we did a good job of coming back,” Post 70 head coach Bradley Futch said. “Jalin (Lawson) and Chase (Connell) got some big hits for us in the fifth inning to get us back in the game. And Blake (Hutchinson) closed it out for us on the mound.”

Hutchinson earned the win with three innings pitched, three runs allowed on one hit, two strikeouts and two walks.

Each team scored one run in the first inning, but Enterprise jumped out with four runs in the second inning. Troy scored two runs in the third to cut the lead to 5-3 and took a 7-5 lead in the fifth inning.

Enterprise tied the score in the sixth, but Troy added two runs in the bottom of the inning for a 9-7 lead. Hutchinson allowed one run in the top of the seventh, but shut Enterprise down for the win.

Connell went 3-for-4 with three doubles and one run scored. Lawson was 2-for-5 with a double and one run scored. Gregory Barnette went 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored.

Michael Fox had two walks and two runs scored. Dalton Harris scored one run, Michael Thomas had a double and a run scored and Hutchinson and Austin Adler each had one hit.

Enterprise again took an early lead on Troy in game two by scoring two runs in the first and one in the second for a 3-0 advantage. Troy scored one in the bottom of the second, but Enterprise bounced back with one in the third for a 4-1 lead.

The four runs would be enough, as the only other runs for Troy came in the sixth inning when K.D. Edenfield led off with a triple and Connell blasted a home run to cut the lead to 4-3.

Neither team scored again, but Troy threatened with runners on first and second with one out in the seventh.

“We did a good job to get it back to 4-3 and I knew we had a chance to win the game with the top of the order up in the seventh,” Futch said. “But we got an unfortunate break with runners on first and second with one out and we couldn’t win it.”

Connell continued to hit with a hot bat, going 2-for-3 in game two with a home run, a double, two runs scored and two RBIs.

Chance Shaver was 2-for-4, Nathan Barron went 2-for-3 with a walk and Edenfield was 1-for-4 with a triple and a run scored.

Post 70 is back in action Wednesday when they face the Wiregrass Cardinals at Riddle-Pace Field at 5:30 p.m. in one nine-inning game.
