The Dixie Ponytails tournament team is currently practicing in preparation for its sub-district tournament in Midland City on June 25.

The team will compete against teams from Eufaula, Dothan and Midland City in the tournament and the winner will move on to the district tournament.

Head coach Lamar Riley said he would have liked to start the tournament against a different team.

“I could have picked a better first round opponent,” Riley said. “I picked the team that’s supposed to be the team to beat, Eufaula.”

One of Riley’s players, Christina Goshea, seemed optimistic about the team’s chances.

“I think we’re going to do real good,” Goshea said.

Riley said he had a proven strategy for success.

“The strategy right now is to hit the ball and score runs,” Riley said.

Riley also said he has been pleased with his team’s performance in practice.

“They’re looking all right,” Riley said. “They’re young, real young. We’ve got a long ways to go, but so far, everything’s going real well. They all play good and they all play hard. We’re a pretty good and level team.”

Goshea was also pleased with the practice so far, with one exception.

“Practice has been going good, but it’s just hot,” Goshea said.

In addition to Goshea, the Ponytails tournament team includes Kayli Adams, Amberlyn Baker, Chelsea Carr, Kayla Dendy, Kelli Grant, Shelby Hughes, Laken Little, Laken Maulden, Meredith Motes, Paige Riley and Taylor Shelton.

The coaches are head coach Lamar Riley and assistant coaches Drexel Hughes, Carey Maulden and Christopher Goshea.
