“America’s Got Talent” and so does the Wiregrass.

Those who think they’ve got talent and see spotlights in their future have the opportunity of a lifetime when Dothan selects its first “superstar.”

On Aug. 14, the hub city of Houston County, will select the first Dothan Superstar in a talent competition and fundraiser produced by the Houston-Love Library Friends of the Library. The talent competition is open to those from grade 10 to age 24 and there are no geographic boundaries.

“Talent in all forms is just waiting to be discovered,” said Sharman Ramsey, fundraising chair for Friends of the Library. “The Friends of the Library view this fundraiser as chance to open another window of hope and opportunity for our young people … something libraries do best.”

Dothan Superstar talent competition will be divided into categories of group and individual vocal, dance, instrumental and variety – such as mime, puppetry and comedy. “The process begins with the application process with a deadline of July 6,” Ramsey said. “Tryouts will be held at 6:30 p.m. on July 20 and 21and possibly Aug. 3 and 4, if needed. Tryouts will be at the Cultural Arts Center and open to the public for a donation of five dollars.”

The top three competitors in each category will perform at the Dothan Superstar Finale on Aug. 14 and the Grand Prize winner will be announced. The Grand Prize winner will perform at the National Peanut Festival in Dothan in the fall and also receive other prizes.

Judges for the Finale will be stars from Country Crossing and Dothan’s own Rhett Bryson, who now teaches at Furman University where he is a professor of Theater Arts. His career actually began as a youngster when he took “gigs” as a puppeteer for birthday parties. Judges from Country Crossings will be announced later. The director for the Finale is Catherine Ford Fancher, a Dothan native with Hollywood credentials. Emcees for Dothan Superstar will be disc jockeys from WKMX.

Tickets for the Dothan Superstar Finale on Aug. 14 are $15.
