Some things get folks fired up, and football might be one of them. Just ask the folks in Goshen who petitioned a local court to stop the hiring of a new football coach at Goshen High School, claiming the superintendent and school board haven’t followed a thorough job search process.

The court is expected to make a ruling about the petition this week and meanwhile, a group of vocal Goshen residents were on-hand for the Pike County Board of Education meeting on Monday to protest the proposed hiring of a new football coach at Goshen. The group of residents who attended the meeting want board members to hire a local candidate, Robin Snyder, who curently coaches at Charles Henderson Middle School, and is opposed the hiring of Mike McCombs, who was recommended by principal Al Griffin and superintendent Mark Bazzell.

At issue in the petition, though, are allegations of clandestine meetings between the superintendent, principal and school board members – meetings which violate the spirit and intent of the open meetings law. If these meetings took place, with the intent of discussing the open position and the hiring of McCombs or any other individual, then the residents of Goshen and Pike County will have bigger worries than football coaches.

We hope the football coach issue can be resolved, with minimal conflict and consternation. At this point, two men’s careers are at stake.

Then, we hope we have a quick resolution to the petition before the court. We want to know if the law has been broken and, if so, what consequences these entities will face.
