The Troy Public Library is celebrating the tradition of Christmas in July a couple of weeks early.

For Christmas came to the Friends of the Library on Tuesday morning with the arrival of the “Friends” 2009 Christmas ornaments that feature First Baptist Church of Troy.

But the ornaments are more than Christmas ornaments. For many collectors, they are heritage ornaments that “hang” around all year long.

“The Friends of the Library ornaments have been very popular over the years,” said Juanita Rogers, Friends president.

“In fact, this is our 14th edition, and we have sold out of every edition except for a few First Methodist Church ornaments.

“We order early because we have a lot of people from out of town who purchase the ornaments, and we want to have them available. And, of course, for residents who go ahead and get the ornaments to make sure they have them for Christmas gifts.”

Troy Mayor Jimmy Lunsford, traditionally purchases the first ornament each year, and he buys for several family members who look forward to adding to their collections.

Rogers said a lot of people have the entire collection of Troy Christmas ornaments, and some are just beginning their collections while others purchase only the ornaments that have special meaning to them.

The 2009 Christmas ornaments are $11 each and are available at the Troy Public Library.

Funds from the ornament sale are donated to the library to purchase items that are not included in the annual budget but are needed.

Friends of the Library recently purchased two desks for the microfilm reader and printer.

“We always support the children’s programs and purchase other items such as computers as the need arises,” Rogers said.

Friends of the Troy Public Library always welcome new friends.
