The old adage that you can’t keep a good man down is multiplied many times over when it comes to volunteers.

The plans for last weekend’s Pike County Habitat for Humanity Blitz Build in Troy were postponed because of the heavy rains that made laying the foundation impossible.

But, as soon as the sun peeked out and the ground dried, the volunteers were on the lot to give rise to Habitat’s 10th Pike County home — the Fayson home.

“Today, we can lock the doors on this thing. We got that far along,” said Fred Johnson, AmeriCorps VISTA with Pike County Habitat for Humanity. “Even with today’s rain, we’ve gotten a lot done. We had about 25 volunteers out here today and we’ve got the house wrapped and ready to put the vinyl siding and roof on.”

The materials arrived on Wednesday and six members of the Troy University football team and the sons of the resident of the second Pike County Habitat house unloaded the truck.

“People are always asking me if the families that get the houses ever come back and help and I tell them all the time,” Johnson said. “Kent Robinson and Cory Bean were here working in appreciation for their mother’s house. If it had not been for them and the Troy University football players, we would still be unloading lumber. Yes, sir. Habitat homeowners are appreciative and they do come back and show their appreciation by working on other houses.”

The Blitz Build work that remains on the Fayson home includes some light work and some heavier jobs like raising the roof.

“We’ll be pulling electrical wire and putting shingles on the roof,” Johnson said. “We’ve go tsomething for everybody and we do need volunteers.”

Santa Fe Cattle Company will provide the lunch for the volunteers today and the Fayson family will serve spaghetti and salad at noon on Saturday.

“This house is being built for the Faysons and they wanted to show their appreciation by providing a meal for the volunteers in addition to putting sweat equity into the house,” Johnson said. “Habitat homeowners always do their part and more.”

Johnson said Sunday is not a workday for Habitat ,but he’s sure that there will be someone working throughout the day.

“We need volunteers today and Saturday, and we welcome them on Sunday, too,” he said. “If you want to be a part of something that is making a difference in the lives of others, Habitat is a great place to do just that.”
