There was not a cloud in the sky, but the Thunder rolled in fast and hard Tuesday night in Troy.

The Troy Thunder pounded the Zion Chapel Rebels 10-1 and 12-0 in Dixie Majors doubleheader action at Butch Austin Field on the campus of Pike Liberal Arts School.

“A lot of our young kids got a lot of playing time and everybody hit the ball pretty good,” Thunder head coach Scott Ross said. “These were definitely two good wins for us because Zion Chapel’s high school team went deep into the playoffs, so you know they have quality kids and a quality team.”

Logan “Pork Chop” Stewart, Layton “Ennis” Grant and Dylan “The Weapon” Burnham combined to allow one run on two hits, strike out 12 Rebels and walk seven in nine innings of baseball.

“Our pitching was a little bit of a question mark because we used almost all of our pitchers in a tournament this weekend, but we had two real good performances,” Ross said.

Stewart also handled Zion at the plate, going a combined 4-for-6 with one three-run home run, seven RBIs and three runs scored.

“I was just seeing the ball good,” Stewart said.

In game one the Thunder (5-1) allowed one run in the first inning, but scored three in the bottom half of the inning and did not allow another run all night. They tacked on four runs in the second inning and three in the fourth for the 10-1 victory.

Bradley “The Real Deal” Deel went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and one RBI. Grant had two RBIs and three runs scored. Justin “Big Mac” McLaughlin contributed an RBI and Sam “Smoke” Carroll, Burnham and Lawson “Malibu” Stewart each scored one run.

Troy and Zion traded goose eggs until Troy broke the game open with three runs in the second inning and added nine runs on four hits and five free passes in the third inning. After Zion went quietly in the top of the fourth the game was called by mercy rule.

Tyler “Man Child” Deel contributed in other ways to the doubleheader sweep.

The Thunder went 3-1 in the Churches Chicken Invitational in Opp last weekend. The team beat Luverne 9-1 in the opening game and Carroll and Blake “Goat” Floyd stole the show. Carroll went 2-for-4 with two doubles and Floyd went 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and a walk. Floyd picked up the win on the mound, throwing four innings and allowing one run on two hits. He struck out six.

Evan “Frank” Strother scored a run in the game.

Troy beat Ozark 8-3 in game two and scored six runs in the final two innings for the comeback win. Deel was 3-for-4 and was a home run away from the cycle with three runs scored.

Game three was a 14-5 win over Opp and the final game of the tournament was a 15-4 loss to Opp.
