Banks to keep dirt road

A small unpaved road located just off of Highway 29 will stay in the possession of the city of Banks, the Banks town council said Tuesday night.

That’s after the owner of the recently opened Red Root Farm had attempted to have the road closed in order to solve problems with drainage.

“It’s not traveled very much. The owner of Red Root Farm, which just opened for business, wanted to close the road because his family used to own it,” said Banks Mayor Dewayne Henderson. “He said the drainage was causing problems with the foundation of his building, and he thought by closing it that it would solve the drainage problems.” Henderson said the city was worried about the precedent that turning over the road might set.

“We opted not to turn it over to him because if we turn it over, there might be other roads that people might want, and we didn’t want to run into that,” Henderson said.

Although the road will remain open, the city will solve the drainage issues.

“We’re not going to close the road, but we are going to take care of the drainage problems.”
