The Charles Henderson Trojans’ baseball team was hit hard by graduation and lost nine players, but the Troy American Legion Post 70 Trojans opened the summer season with a 2-2 showing in the Troy Invitational May 29-31.

“I thought we were competitive all weekend,” Post 70 head coach Bradley Futch said. “Defensively we missed a couple of plays, but we hit the ball well and had some great pitching on the mound.”

Troy opened the tournament against the Wiregrass Cardinals out of Dothan on Friday and lost a close game, 8-7.

Quay Lawson scored two runs and blasted a home run to lead the Trojans. Mitch McLeod had two hits and three runs scored.

K.D. Edenfield added two hits and one run scored and Chase Connell and Michael Thomas each had two hits.

Edenfield took the loss on the mound.

The Trojans beat Tuscaloosa Red 5-1 in game two Friday.

Lawson again led Troy, going 3-for-3 with a double, a triple and three runs scored. Nathan Barron was 2-for-3 with one run scored and Edenfield scored the other run for Troy. Barron picked up the win on the mound.

Troy beat Americus (Ga.) 5-4 on Saturday and Dalton Harris picked up the win on the mound. He allowed two runs on seven hits and struck out two. Chance Shaver pitched three innings of relief and allowed two runs on one hit and struck out one.

Offensively, Lawson hit another home run and McLeod and Shaver each had two hits and one run scored. Barron and Edenfield each scored one run.

Troy ended its tournament run with an 11-9 loss to tournament champion Holmes County (Fla.)

Josh Davenport was hit with the loss on the hill and Harris had a home run in the game.

Up next for Troy is a home doubleheader against Northview Thursday at 5 p.m.
