American Legion Post 70 Auxiliary has announced its Alabama Girl State selections for 2009.

Alex Graham, Charles Henderson High School, and Rachel Kyzar, Pike Liberal Arts School, were chosen to represent their schools and Post 70 Auxiliary at the 2009 session of Alabama Girls State that will be held on the campus of Troy University June 7-12.

Faye Pittman, Auxiliary president, said Post 70 Auxiliary is proud to have representatives with such outstanding academic and community service records and of such high moral standards as its representatives.

“Participating in the Alabama Girls State program is a tradition of the American Legion Post 70 Auxiliary and we have had excellent representatives each year,” Pittman said. “And, we are extremely proud to have Alex and Rachel as our 2009 representatives.”

For one week, the Alabama Girls State representatives will become citizens in an imaginary state. They will take part in the political life of the community through campaigning for and electing city, county and state offices.

“The representatives will learn the operation of government by participating in party caucuses and through the election process,” Pittman said. “They will also have the opportunity to hear well-known speakers as well as county, city and state officials.”

Pittman said both Graham and Kyzar are actively involved in school activities.

Graham is a member of the National Honor Society, Student Government Association (secretary), Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Spanish Club, Mu Alpha Theta (vice president), Interact (president) and Art Club. She is a varsity cheerleader and a 2008 HOBY participant. She is a member of the Twilighter Community Service Club and the First Baptist youth group.

Pittman said Graham plans to campaign for the office of council member.

Kyzar is a member of the National Honor Society, the Beta Club, yearbook staff, Dugout Dolls, the prom committee and junior class treasurer. She participated in the Science Olympiad and the Auburn University High School Leadership Conference.

Kyzar is a member of the Junior Red Cross, the Humane Society of Pike County, the Twenty-One Social Service Club and Hephzibah Baptist Church youth group.

Pittman said American Legion Post 70 and the Auxiliary will host a dinner in honor of the Alabama Girls State representatives in September. Graham and Kyzar will have an opportunity to speak to the Post members about their experiences at Alabama Girls State.
