Seventeen teachers and support personnel in the Troy City School system will keep their jobs thanks to stimulus funds.

But all jobs won’t be saved.

The Troy Board of Education approved a fund source change for the 2010 budget to allow the system to plug in money from stimulus funds to enable the system to keep these jobs.

While non-renewals won’t officially be announced until later this week, Superintendent Linda Felton-Smith said there are three teaching positions and three support staff positions that won’t be renewed, bringing the total to six lost jobs.

At Pike County Schools, the board had nine non-renewals and four transfers but for different reasons.

Pike County Schools Superintendent Mark Bazzell said these non-renewals had nothing to do with money.

“These have nothing to do with proration,” Bazzell said.

According to Bazzell, the school system usually has some non-renewals every year.

During the TCS meeting, the board also approved tenure recommendations.

The board approved six tenures at Troy Elementary School, three at Charles Henderson Middle School and six at Charles Henderson High School.

TCS also accepted two resignations one from eighth grade teacher Marcus Woodham and one from Steve Haug, as CHHS softball coach both effective May 29, 2009.

At PCS, the board voted to accept a resignation from Goshen High School teacher, Head Football Coach and Athletic Director Joe Thornton but only accepted it conditionally since Thornton did not inform the board of a resignation date.

While there were some resignations and non-renewals in both school systems, there were some new hires.

At Pike County Schools, the board approved employment for Troy Daniel Walden to become band director at Goshen High School, Richard Wilson and Calvin Morris to become JROTC instructors at GHS and PCHS, respectively. The board also approved Nathan Fordham as social studies teacher at PCHS and Ucella Jones as a second grade teacher at Goshen Elementary School.

At Troy City Schools, the board voted to hire Paula Hinson as culinary arts teacher, effective July 21.
