DENTON, Texas — The Troy Trojans softball team was knocked out of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament by the Western Kentucky University Hilltoppers on Thursday, 6-2.

“Obviously we would have liked to have gone further into the tournament, but that wasn’t how it played out for us,” Trojans head coach Melanie Davis said.

The Trojans and Hilltoppers both faced elimination in the mid-day contest, and the Hilltoppers, fueled by back-to-back home runs, ended Troy’s shot at advancing in the tournament.

Two straight home runs gave WKU a 4-0 lead and they never looked back.

“The home runs were big for their momentum in the game,” Davis said. “We knew it would be a tough game today.”

The Trojans got on the board in the top of the sixth inning with a two-run homer from Nikki Hollett.

The Hilltoppers added two more runs and Troy did not score again.

Ashlyn Williams took the loss in the circle, allowing four runs on four hits. She struck out two and walked two. Allison Moore relieved Williams in the third inning.

Troy will now wait to see if their 38-19 is good enough for an invitation Sunday to the NCAA Tournament.
