Alli Warrick and Heather Hines would not let anyone score Tuesday afternoon at Zion Chapel High School.

Hines and the host Zion Chapel Lady Rebels escaped the pitcher’s duel with a 1-0 win over Warrick and the No. 2 seed Lady Eagles of Goshen in game two of the AHSAA Class 2A, Area 5 tournament.

“Our girls were hitting the ball good, but it was just going right to them and I told our girls to just keep hitting and they will fall,” Zion Chapel head coach Chelsi Jones said.

Warrick allowed only two hits through six innings of play, but two singles in the bottom of the seventh allowed the Lady Rebels (15-14) to escape with the win.

Jones substituted Becca Hodge for Nicole Mauldin to lead off the seventh and it was obvious early what Hodge was trying to do. She squared to bunt and missed the first one, but she got the second down and ran for first. She reached the bag at the same time as the ball, but the throw from the catcher was wild and Hodge made her way to third on the error.

“She is one of my fastest runners and she is usually there when we need her and she stepped in and I am very, very proud of her,” Jones said.

Jones scored on a bloop single by Hillarie Davis with one out to end the game.

The Lady Eagles (16-8) put together five hits against Hines, but could not get a run across. The biggest threat from Goshen came in the third inning when the Lady Eagles loaded bases with one out, but could not punch in a run.

“For a young team I couldn’t be any prouder,” GHS head coach Dee Hughes said. “We outhit them again, but we just could not get the hits at the right times. But for them to handle the pressure in that game was great and Alli pitched a great game. We just can’t get down because there is more ball to play.”

Warrick recorded six strikeouts and one walk and Hines had four strikeouts and two walks.

Amanda Griggs led the way with two hits for Goshen and Warrick and Kristen Dease each had one hit. Erika Mount had the only two hits in the game for Zion Chapel before the seventh.

The Lady Eagles beat Highland Home 10-0 in the first game of the tournament Tuesday.

Griggs picked up the win on the mound, throwing a complete game in the mercy rule shortened five-inning game. She allowed zero runs on two hits and struck out five batters while walking none. She also had one hit and one run scored at the plate.

Niyoka Slater led the Lady Eagles, going 3-for-4 with two triples, two runs scored, one RBI and one stolen base. Warrick added a solo home run, one stolen base and one walk. Ashley Tarver scored two runs as a courtesy runner for Warrick.

Shelby Jo Vinson added one hit, two walks and one RBI. Samantha Roy was 2-for-4 with one RBI. Sidney Sullivan went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Mary Jordan was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and one walk. Kaitlin Thomas had one hit and one RBI.

Goshen and Highland Home were playing in an elimination game when the weather forced postponement of the game.

The Lady Eagles and Lady Flying Squadron will play today at 10 a.m. to determine which team faces Zion Chapel in the championship game.

The championship game will be played immediately following the conclusion of the Goshen-Highland Home game.
