Although some folks haven’t waited all year long for Butter Churnin,’ Syrup Soppin’ Saturday at the Pioneer Museum of Alabama, it’s a good bet those who attended last year’s event have.

The butter churnin’ will begin at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 9, and the syrup soppin’ will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“Butter Churnin,’ Syrup Soppin’ Saturday is a day that we set aside for people to remember or to know what it was like to churn fresh butter and sop syrup,” said Jerry Peak, museum director. “We’ll have volunteers churning butter on the porches of several of the cabins and we’ll be making homemade biscuits and serve them with fresh butter from our churns, cane syrup and smoked sausage.”

The old-time breakfast will be included in the price of admission to the museum — $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and $4 for children 12 and under.

“With admission, we will issue a ticket for the biscuit, syrup and sausage plate but, for those who want them, additional plates will be $3,” Peak said.

The biscuits will be baked and plates served at the Reunion and Demonstration cabins.

“You can sop your biscuit or have a pokey syrup biscuit,” Peak said. “ A pokey biscuit is where you poke a hole in the biscuit with your thumb and pour syrup in the hole.”

Musicians will be picking and singing on the porches and strolling the grounds. Visitors will be invited to sing along or sit and listen.

“Spinners, weavers and quilters will be at work in the museum,” Peak said. “We’ll also have organ music in the museum. Outside, the grist mill will be running and Grover Poole will give wagon rides and the mini-train will be running.”

Something new for Butter Churn,’ Syrup Soppin’ Saturday will be pony rides for the children.

“There will be an extra charge for the pony rides,” Peak said. “One of the ponies does tricks so there will also be a pony show for everyone to enjoy.”

Peak said Butter Churn,’ Syrup Soppin’ Saturday will be a fun, learning day and those who attend will be encouraged to spend time in the museum and also visiting the historic structures on the grounds.
