The Brundidge City Council will soon move forward with efforts to fund sewer and dilapidated housing projects in the city.

In its Tuesday meeting, the council voted to allow Mayor Jimmy Ramage and City Manager Britt Thomas to move ahead in the process of applying for 2009 Community Block Development Grant projects.

The council decided to take on sewer rehabilitation and dilapidated houses throughout parts of Brundidge.

However, they haven’t decided which areas of the city to tackle.

Thomas showed the council numerous homes in Brundidge that could be considered in the project.

Homes ranging from unoccupied houses with exposed sewage lines to mobile homes that are uninhabitable to the old Hudson Industries building.

Thomas emphasized the importance of narrowing down an area because the state has taken away a needs factor in considering who gets the grant money, which has always given the city a cushion.

“Our advisers believe we should narrow our area,” Thomas said.

Thomas said the city’s older sewer lines are in the area of Wassau Street and John Street.

In other business, the council passed a resolution honoring firefighters and EMS personnel.

This resolution is in conjunction with a statewide recognition that will take place June 19 at the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center to honor firefighters who have served a minimum of 10 years.

Mike Sandell of Care Ambulance was on hand at the meeting and shared with the council, since his service has been able to put a paramedic truck in Brundidge, the response time has been between three and seven minutes.

Currently, Care has ambulance personnel on hand from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 24 hours a day on Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sundays.

Fire Chief Jonathan Sneed also told the council the department offers free installation of fire detectors for residents in the Brundidge fire area.
