By proclamation of Mayor Jimmy Lunsford, the week of May 3-10 is National Music Week in Troy.

The mayor signed the proclamation on Monday and encouraged all Troy citizens to observe and take part in activities that focus on music this week and throughout the year. “We should all recognized the importance of music, musicians and musical organizations to the cultural life of our city, our state, our nation and our world,” Lunsford said. “Music plays an increasingly important role in our world today. It is one of the most sublime human pursuits and is subscribed to by all races and creeds. Music is the language of all people and one of the greatest forces in creating peace and harmony.”

The Troy Music Study Club is dedicated to encouraging young musicians, to increasing musical knowledge and to advancing American music. The local music club has joined forces with the National Federation of Music Clubs to direct attention to the dynamic influence of music in everyday living.

“Recognizing the importance of music in our culture, the Troy Music Study Club, as a member of both the Alabama Federation of Music Clubs and the National Federation of Music Clubs, encourages our extended community to participate in musical activities as well as live performances when every possible,” said June Kendrick, club president. “The Southeast Alabama Band Concert was Monday night. Tonight we have a Chamber music program at the Cultural Arts Studio in Troy and the Troy-Pike Youth Orchestra also will perform. The Charles Henderson Middle School Choir will be in concert at the school on May 11. We have a wide variety of musical programs here in Troy year around and we encourage everyone to be a part of these programs.”
