The “Concerts in the Studio” will continue tonight with the Troy Arts Council’s Spring Chamber Concert at 7 p.m. in the Cultural Arts Studio on East Walnut Street.

The concert is billed as “The Best of Both Worlds” and will celebrate a four-year collaboration between the Troy University John M. Long School of Music and the Troy-Pike Cultural Arts Center through performances by groups from both institutions.

The concert will feature some of the finest brass ensembles from Troy University and the Troy-Pike Youth Orchestra, which is based at the Troy-Pike Cultural Arts Center.

The Troy University brass ensembles include the Trojan Brass, the Troy Symphony Brass Quintet and the Troy Trumpet Ensemble I and II.

“A highlight of the concert will be two world premieres to be performed by the Troy University Trumpet Ensemble I under the direction of James Zingara, music associate professor and concert series coordinator.

“The first piece that the ensemble will play is ‘Guardians of the East,’ which was composed by Canadian composer David Marlatt, and celebrates the new connection between Troy University and academic institutions in China,” Zingara said. “The second is an original piece for six trumpets titled ‘Durrenhorn Passage’ by Boston composer Kevin McKee. Both pieces were commissioned for the Troy University Trumpet Ensemble’s upcoming appearance at the International Trumpet Guild Conference.”

The Troy-Pike Youth Orchestra’s performance will be the final of its inaugural year.

“We’re excited to be a part of the ‘Town and Gown’ event,” said Ginger Zingara, youth orchestra leader. “The students who make up the orchestra have all done a terrific job, and I welcome the opportunity to showcase their talents.”

The students range in age from 8 to 17 and four of them will be featured soloists at tonight’s performance.

The youth orchestra will play “Celtic Dance,” “Bought Me a Fiddle” and “Rockin’ Strings” which will highlight Joseph Melancon on drums.

“Noland Lamar, Carly Smith and Soobin Park will be featured soloists on the cello and Jeremy Lamar will be featured on the violin,” James Zingara said. “Haley Jordan, Kelsey Peterson, Hannah Jordan, Amber Hughes and Melissa Kingsmore are the other members of our youth orchestra, and I’m so proud of all of them and what they have accomplished.”

Zingara will present awards to the most valuable youth orchestra player, the most improved and the most outstanding.

The “Concerts at the Studio” are offered as gifts to the community and are free and open to the public. Everyone is encouraged to attend tonight’s performances of the Troy University brass ensembles and the Troy-Pike Youth Orchestra.
