History was made Tuesday in Troy for both sides of a Class 5A Sub-State soccer game. The Charles Henderson Trojans hosted a playoff game for the first time ever and the Spanish Fort Toros reached the playoffs for the first time in school history.

The Toros outlasted the Trojans Tuesday 2-0 in a defensive struggle. After a goal by Spanish Fort’s Josh Hester nearly two minutes into the game the team’s swapped missed shots until Robert Munger sealed the win for the Toros late in the second half with a goal.

“I don’t think we found rhythm today,” CHHS head coach Olaf Lieb said. “And we also had 14 players to their 22, so fatigue was an issue late in the game for us and we never fully connected the way we have all season.”

The Trojans (9-4) may not have been able to penetrate the Toro defense, but it was not for lack of trying. Following Munger’s goal, the Trojans pressured the goal and took many shots on goal.

“I think they played their hearts out and I am proud of them,” Lieb said. “In the second half fatigue just became too much of a factor. We will now look forward to next season.”

But Spanish Fort would not crack and they moved on to the next round to face St. Paul’s Saturday.

“I am real excited and I think our seniors really came out and set a quick tone for us,” Spanish Fort head coach Joe German said.

German said the game plan was to shut down Lloyd Shillabeer and they did a good job of containing him all night.

“He is one of the top players in the state and the defense did a good job of surrounding him and crowding him in,” he said.
