The Troy University “Sound of the South” Concert Band will present its annual spring concert at 6 p.m. tonight at the Troy University amphitheater.

“The spring concert is an old-fashioned band concert in the park and it’s a great way to welcome spring,” said Ray Smith, concert band director. “This is a good time to spread a picnic or relax in lawn chairs under the stars while enjoying an evening of light concert music and fun.”

Smith said the program will include traditional music and familiar pieces.

“The band will be performing classic literature including a Spanish march titled ‘Amparito Roca,’ which is a lot of fun,” Smith said. “We’ll also perform Holst’s ‘Second Suite in F,’ that is easily recognized and Richard Wagner’s ‘Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral.’”

Smith said Wagner’s work has maintained a timeless elegance that has made it a standard.

Adam Hudson will be the featured soloist in the jazz classic, “I’m Confessin’ That I Love You,” and the audience will immediately recognize the overture to the great Broadway musical, “Les Miserables.”

Several contemporary “big number” band pieces will be conducted by Larry Blocher.

“We’ll also do a beautiful piece, ‘Precious Lord’ and no concert in the park would be complete without John Phillip Sousa’s march classic, ‘Stars and Stripes Forever,’ which will be conducted by Dr. Johnny Long,” Smith said. “The concert will last about an hour. The weather should be nice and admission is free. So come enjoy an evening of great band music with us tonight at the Troy University amphitheater.”
