The Goshen High Lady Eagles fell in a 7-0 shutout against the Pleasant Home Lady Eagles in the single elimination Elba Tune-Up Tournament on Saturday.

The Lady Eagles had previously defeated the New Brockton Lady Gamecocks 3-1 in tournament play.

Coach Dee Hughes said the Lady Eagles fell to a strong softball club.

“We hung in for two innings with Pleasant Home, but in the third inning, they blew it up on us. We fell to a good hitting ball club,” she said. “Their record right now is 26-2 and they are ranked second in the state in 1A. We had three errors throughout the whole game and they had seven hits for the game. The closest we got to scoring was having a runner at second.”

Hughes said the Lady Eagles need to work on their hitting game.

“At this point, towards the end of the year, we are still not hitting the ball like we need to. We should be hitting a lot better than we are, so we have a lot to improve upon for next year,” she said. “We are a young softball team. Our team is mostly made up of seventh through tenth graders. We have no juniors and one senior. We have a lot of potential for being so young.”

Hughes said that the tournament was a good warm up for the area tournament on Friday.

“It was a really good tournament for us at first. Two out of four of the teams that we played are ranked in the state,” she said. “These were good softball games, and it was a great warm up for the area tournament coming up this week. We played good teams and our girls showed that we could play with some of the best teams in the state.”

The Lady Eagles fell 10-0 in a shutout against the Kinston Lady Bulldogs and then tied 4-4 in a match against the Charles Henderson Lady Trojans in pool play on Friday night.

“The game against Charles Henderson was tough. It was a hard fought game,” Hughes said. “Yesterday was not one of our better days defensively. Despite that, I feel that we did well throughout the tournament and I’m excited about the area tournament next week.”

The Lady Eagles will play Friday in the area tournament in Eufaula.
