Crimson Tide crushes Troy

The Alabama Crimson Tide scored freely on the Troy Trojans Tuesday night in a 22-4 win in Tuscaloosa.

Alabama (21-10) scored five runs on three hits in the bottom of the first to jump out to a 5-0 lead on the Trojans. Taylor Dugas doubled to open the inning and with two outs the Crimson Tide pushed five across. Jake Smith belted a grand slam home run after Kent Matthes and Brandon May walked to load the bases for Smith.

Clay Jones followed with a solo shot to left field.

Troy (18-13) cut the deficit to 5-2 in the top of the second when Brett Henry and Chad Watson each drilled solo home runs.

Alabama added six runs on six hits in the bottom of the second. Dugas opened the inning with a single and Josh Rutledge and Ross Wilson reached base in front of Matthes, who hit a grand slam.

Smith recorded his fifth RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly to plate May and Cody Trotter singled home Jones who had doubled to reach base.

The Crimson Tide added one run in the third inning for a 12-2 lead. Wilson doubled and Matthes drove him in with a sacrifice fly.

Troy cut the lead to 12-3 with one run in the fourth inning on an RBI groundout by Miles Hoyle that scored Steven Felix.

The Tide tacked on another five runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings for the 22-4 victory.
