The Troy Trojans softball team split a pair of Saturday afternoon games with the Florida Atlantic Owls.

“We put ourselves in a position where tomorrow we have to come out and take care of the series,” Trojans head coach Melanie Davis said.

Game one was a tight match that lasted for 10 innings. Ashlyn Williams grabbed the win for Troy in game one on the mound. Williams went all 10 innings striking out 13 batters, and allowed four hits and walks.

“We had quality pitching today,” Davis said. Williams and the Trojans defense held the Owls to two runs in the 3-2, extra innings victory.

Troy scored runs in the first and second innings, and the Trojans scored their final run in the tenth inning to grab the win.

With the international tie-breaker rule in effect, Kala Moore was placed on second to start the bottom of the tenth inning. Heidi Johnson advanced Moore to third with a sacrifice bunt, and Moore scored in the next at bat off of a wild pitch.

The run sealed the win for Troy, and game two was another tight contest. Tasha Elmore posted a double in the game, and Nikki Hollet was two-for-three in the game.

The Trojans however came out on the losing end of game two, 3-1.

The Trojans started Allison Moore on the mound. Moore went the distance and struck out eight batters. The Owls posted six hits and three runs against the Trojans defense.

“Our pitching was quality in both games,” Davis said. “I just wasn’t happy with our defense and our hitting.”

FAU jumped out on top first in game two similar to the first game of the day.

“I felt like Florida Atlantic stepped up in game two,” Davis said. “Their pitcher had a good game and they had quality at bats. They made things happen, and we didn’t respond in a quality way. I give all the credit to Florida Atlantic.”

The Owls went up 1-0 in the top of the first inning, but the Trojans responded and tied things up in the bottom of the second inning.

FAU punched in a run in the top of the third inning and another in the seventh en route to the victory.

Nikki Hollet posted a triple in the game going one-for-three in the contest. Hollet scored the Trojans only run as well.

The series deciding game three is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
