Daniel Hartley was staring an ofer in the face Friday night.

But Hartley stepped to the plate in the bottom of the 10th inning and drilled a pitch over the right fielder’s head with two outs to plate David Fleming for the game-winning run in a 7-6 Charles Henderson win over area foe Carroll at Hogan’s Hole.

“We had played too many extra innings and it was time to get the job done,” Hartley said. “I got the privilege of getting up there with the bases loaded and I got an easy shot to right field and that was all we needed. I had a rough night up to that point, so it felt great to get that hit.”

Fleming walked to open the inning for the No. 4 Trojans (18-7, 3-0 AHSAA Class 5A, Area 3), Chance Shaver put down a sacrifice bunt to move him to second, K.D. Edenfield walked with two outs and Dario Rouse was intentionally walked to get to Hartley.

Hartley made Carroll pay with the two-out blast, but CHHS head coach Derek Irons was happy with his team’s approach in the final inning.

“We struggled with patience most of the night, but then finally in the last inning we had patience and took the walks,” Irons said. “Fleming gets his first at bat of the night and works a leadoff walk and Dario’s intentional walk came because he had a good game and with the bases loaded Daniel had a chance to win the game and that is what he did.”

Irons was not surprised Hartley stepped up and contributed the game-winning hit after going 0-for-5 until that point on the evening.

“Daniel has been a leader for us all year,” Irons said. “He was hitting exceptionally well at the start of the year and he has hit a little bit of a rough patch and tonight wasn’t his best night.

“But that last at bat was everything you could hope for. He got a pitch he could handle and he hit a line drive to right field and did everything right. And that says a lot about him that in the midst of what is not his best night he can still get a great at bat when his team needs him the most.”

The Trojans opened the game like they have opened every other area game, with a 4-0 lead. But Carroll scored three runs to cut the lead to 4-3 and after the Trojans added one run Carroll tied the score at 5-5 to send the game to extra innings.

In the extra frames, Carroll took its first lead of the night at 6-5, but Rouse came through with an RBI double to tie the score at 6-6. The teams posted goose eggs until Hartley ended the game in the 10th.

Jared Rogers picked up the win for the Trojans on the hill, going four innings and allowing two runs on three hits, striking out five batters and walking none. Mitch McLeod started the game and went six innings. He allowed four runs on two hits, struck out five and walked four.

At the plate, Rouse led the way, going 4-for-5 with three singles, a double and one walk. Edenfield was 3-for-4 and was a single away from hitting for the cycle. He had a double, a triple, a two-run home run, a walk and a sacrifice bunt.

Parker Sanders had three runs scored and two walks.
