Double trouble

Tuesday night’s scheduled baseball game between Troy and Southern Miss has been postponed by rain. The game will be made up on Wednesday as part of a double-header, with the first game slated to start at 2 p.m.

Over the last three years the Troy and Southern Miss baseball teams have faced each other on a regular basis.

In 2006, the teams met in Hattiesburg, Miss., and in an NCAA Regional in Tuscaloosa. In 2007, the teams faced each other in Dothan at the Wiregrass Classic, and again in an NCAA Regional, this time in Oxford, Miss.

Last year, the teams met again, back in Hattiesburg.

Finally, this week, the Golden Eagles will find their way to Riddle-Pace Field for the first time, as the teams square off for a pair of mid-week games. Following Tuesday’s postponement, the teams will play a pair of seven-inning games on Wednesday.

Both games will be broadcast live on WTBF-FM 94.7 with Barry McKnight and Jerry Miller calling the action. The games will also be web streamed live on TroyTrojans.com.

The Golden Eagles (16-9) come into the series off a complete demolition of UCF in Conference USA play over the weekend. USM outscored the Knights 51-14 in three games, and run-ruled UCF by scores of 26-10 and 19-1 in a Saturday doubleheader on UCF’s home field.

The Trojans (15-10) also come into the series on a role offensively, having scored 37 runs in three games at UNO over the weekend, including a 19-8 run-rule of their own on Sunday.

Sunday’s starting pitcher for the Trojans, senior left-hander Travis Burge (1-1, 5.55) didn’t make it out of the first inning against the Privateers, but will have a chance to make amends with a start against USM. Prior to his tough outing against UNO, Burge went eight strong innings in a no-decision against Western Kentucky.

Southern Miss will counter with a senior left-hander of its own. Wade Weathers (1-0, 4.91) will be making his first start on the mound for the Golden Eagles after having appeared in nine games in relief.

Senior Brett Henry continues to lead the Trojans offensively with a .378 average after hitting his fourth homer of the year on Sunday.

The Trojans blasted eight homers in the series against UNO, including a pair by senior Trevor Tyre, who went deep in back-to-back at bats on Sunday.

Junior Chad Watson also comes into the series swinging a hot bat, and playing well in many ways.

He hit .375 last week in four games, drove in nine runs, stole three bases, and played solid baseball defensively in center field. Watson leads the Sun Belt Conference with three triples this year, including one on Sunday at UNO that came with the bases loaded.

Southern Miss is led offensively by senior outfielder Bo Davis with a .418 average, seven home runs and 22 RBI.

Another senior, Brian Dozier, comes into the series batting .412 with a team-high 30 runs driven in.

In the second game, the Trojans are expected to send senior right-hander Jeff Green (3-1, 5.62) to the mound.

Green has a history against USM, having defeated the Golden Eagles 3-2 in 2007 at the Wiregrass Classic in Dothan.
