The Troy Board of Education has found the location it wants for a new central office, but it is still looking for the price.

After the Troy City Council made an offer of $770,000 on the old Army Reserve Center property last week, Superintendent Linda Felton-Smith deferred a decision until she met with the school board Monday.

The board still expressed interest in the property, but still they hope to acquire it at a lower price.

“I recommend we continue negotiations with the city on the sale price of the property,” Felton-Smith said.

The money for a new central office will come from approved bond money allocated by the state in 2007. The total runs approximately $2.1 million, but Felton-Smith said she hopes the project will be capped at $1.5 million.

“At the present time, we have projects at the high school,” Felton-Smith said. “So we plan to not spend all on a central office.”

Felton-Smith said a new school board office is needed for space and to increase efficiency of work. She will continue to work with the city for a different price.

Felton-Smith, who attended an education meeting in Montgomery last week on the stimulus package, said she still is unsure just how much is in story for Troy City Schools.

While figures have changed several times in the last week, she said projections now should bring in around $1.5 million locally. But, those funds won’t be allowed for any use.

Another meeting will be held Friday, where Felton-Smith said she hopes to have a more definitive answer on stimulus funds.

Also in the meeting, the school board approved a calendar for the 2009-2010 school year. The calendar, that matches that of Pike County Schools, will begin school on August 10 and end May 27. Copies will be available on the Troy City Schools Web site beginning today.

Troy BOE members also:

-congratulated students of Charles Henderson Middle School who attended the United Nations. The school had the highest percentage of bills passed of all present.

-approved a textbook committee for language arts books, though new books may not be able to be purchased due to proration.

-approved a summer food service program with the city of Troy.

-presented STARS faculty awards to Glenda Kelly, Patty Kreis, Melissa Scarbrough, Mable Williams and Derek Irons.
