The Troy Trojans softball team knocked of the Western Kentucky University Hilltoppers on Sunday 2-0 to complete a series sweep, and take full possession of first place in the Sun Belt Conference.

“First of all I would like to give a lot of credit to Western Kentucky University,” Trojans head coach Melanie Davis. “They have very solid pitching, great hitters, and they are well coached. They are a very quality program.

“Our goal over the weekend was to take the series because that would allow us to stay in first place in the conference,” Davis said. “Once we took two yesterday, we challenged the girls to make a statement and take the conference series sweep.”

The game was a scoreless affair until the fifth inning. The Trojans got on the board with a two-out rally jump started by senior Felicia Hammer.

Hammer started things off with a single and an error advanced her to second. Jackie Di Siervi came in to pinch run for Hammer, before Sarah Shields plated the freshman from Australia with a double. Hillary Hughes singled to center field scoring Shields and giving the Trojans a two-run lead.

Ashlyn Williams (20-5) got the Sunday afternoon nod in the circle for the Trojans. She went the distance and struck out six batters. She scattered four hits and failed to issue a walk.

The Trojans are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Tuscaloosa to face fourth-ranked University of Alabama. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
