McLeod, Smith power CHHS in area

The Class 5A No. 3 Charles Henderson Trojans played four games in 48 hours this weekend, but the most important of those four were the two 4-0 wins the Trojans picked up over area rival Eufaula Friday night.

Mitch McLeod and Jake Smith combined to throw two complete game shutouts. McLeod pitched the Trojans (17-6) to 2-0 in area play with the first game and Smith threw a one-hitter in the second game that will be used if needed for a tiebreaker.

“We are always pleased to get area wins and that win puts us in good position for where we need to be,” CHHS head coach Derek Irons said.

All four games were played at Riddle-Pace Field on the campus of Troy University because of the torrential downpours of Friday and Saturday.

The Trojans jumped on the Tigers early with three runs in the first inning. Dario Rouse walked to start the rally for the Trojans and Daniel Hartley doubled Rouse home for the 1-0 lead. Quay Lawson ran for Hartley and scored on a single by McLeod. Nathan Barron plated speed up runner Chap Swindall with a single for a 3-0 Trojan lead.

Neither team scored until the Trojans pushed across an insurance run in the sixth inning when Chance Shaver singled home Barron who had reached on an error.

McLeod allowed zero runs on three hits on the mound with four strikeouts and no walks. He also went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, one run scored and an RBI.

“It was a beautiful day today and three double plays showed that the defense was working,” McLeod said. “I just felt good and the defense did too I guess.”

In the second game Smith powered the Trojans to another 4-0 victory with a one-hitter on the mound. He struck out four and walked four.

Parker Sanders, Rouse, Hartley and McLeod each had one hit in the second game.

On Saturday, the Trojans faced the 6A Prattville Lions and David Fleming took the loss in a 5-2 game.

Prattville got on the board first with one run in the second inning. The Trojans bounced back with two in the bottom of the inning.

Smith led the inning off with a single, Shaver doubled and Sanders grounded out to first base to score Smith. K.D. Edenfield singled to drive in Shaver for the 2-1 CHHS lead.

The Lions tied the score at 2-2 in the third inning and took a 3-2 lead with one run in the fourth. They tacked on one run in the fifth and one in the seventh for the 5-2 final.

Fleming allowed four runs on five hits, struck out five batters and walked four. Jared Rogers pitched the final two innings allowing one run on two hits and walking one batter.

At the plate, Sanders, Edenfield, Rouse, McLeod, Smith and Shaver each had one hit.

Charles Henderson lost 8-6 to 5A No. 5 Pleasant Grove Saturday evening. Statistics to follow Tuesday.
