Globetrotting fun

It took six years, but the Harlem Globetrotters made it to Troy Monday evening. The tricksters from Harlem entertained the crowd at Trojan Arena with their high-flying special dunks and dribbling tricks.

“The dunking was so cool and it was so much fun watching them do all their dunks and dribbling act,” said Darshan Patel, of the Enterprise Boy Scouts Troop 150. “Sweet Pea is a beast.”

There may have been a basketball game going on between the Globetrotters and the Washington Generals, but there were many timeouts that found the men from Harlem up in the stands wooing the ladies or on the court showing off their dance skills.

The Globetrotters showed off everything from double alley passes for slam dunks to their moves to Cupid’s “Cupid Shuffle.”

But A.J. Warren, also of Enterprise Troop 150, said the game was the best basketball game he has ever watched.

“That game was awesome and the Harlem Globetrotters are the best basketball team ever made,” Warren said.

Johnny Gibson, vice president of the Pike County United Way, said the group has been trying to get the Globetrotters to Troy since 2003.

“It was hard to get them here with all the logistics, but we are so glad we finally got them in this Arena,” Gibson said. “We were just happy to make a little money and that money will help the businesses in our agency.”

Warren said he hopes the people will remember about the Globetrotters event whenever other events are held.

“We wanted to bring them here to give Pike County a little bit of a different type of enjoyment,” he said.

The Harlem Globetrotters have been entertaining crowds since 1926 across the country and the world.

The 2009 Spinning the Globe World Tour will continue its roll through Alabama with stops in Birmingham and Huntsville.

Nearly 30 individuals make up the Globetrotters team, but “Big Easy” Lofton, “Skyscraper” Alleyne, “Hi Rise” Brown, “Sweet Pea” Shine, “Airport” Greenup, “Spider” Auguste and “Flight Time” Lang wowed the crowd at Trojan Arena Monday night.

The Globetrotters will be in Birmingham March 10 and Huntsville March 17 before leaving Alabama.
