The Miracle Field project is almost halfway to its goal of $300,000, thanks to a gracious donation from Sen. Wendell Mitchell (D-Luverne).

At Thursday nights, Lions Club meeting, Mitchell presented the Miracle Field with a $100,000 check to go toward the project.

Lions Club President Angel Carlson said the funds are really appreciated.

Mitchell said he tries to find a project each year to help in a special way.

“I’ve worked hard with people with disabilities,” Mitchell said. “This one appealed to me.”

With the donation from Mitchell, Debbie Loyd said the project has nearly $130,000.

“We’re almost halfway to where we need to be as far as cash,” Loyd said.

Still, the actual cost to build a Miracle Field is unknown, Loyd said.

“No one has been able to tell us exactly how much one costs, because a lot of labor is donated and materials.”

The Miracle Field project, which will create a baseball field for children and adults with disabilities to play ball, has been under way for around a year now.

Miracle Field supporters hope it will not only help people with disabilities in Pike County, but also the surrounding counties.

Steps to a Healthier AL also gave a $5,016 donation to the Miracle Field project.
