Rufus Maddox

Rufus Henry Maddox, 78, of Montgomery and recently Troy, died Monday, Feb. 23, 2009 at Troy Regional Medical Center. 
He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Mickie Maddox; one brother, Robert White of California; and his parents:  Henry Austin and Dorothy Stalworth Maddox.  
Mr. Maddox was a loving, devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his daughter and son in law:  Monica and Mike Smalley, of Troy; his son and daughter in law:  Robert Austin and Teresa Huner Maddox, Sr., of Benbrook, Texas; granddaughters, Miki and husband, Lonnie Ward, and Marlie Wilkes of Troy; grandson, Robert Austin Maddox Jr. of Benbrook,Texas; and great granddaughter:  Hayden Ella Ward; step granddaughter, Kristina M. Smalley of Georgia; step grandson, Christopher J. Smalley, and step great granddaughter, Reagan E. Smalley, of Enterprise, Ala.; sister and brother in law:  Hazel and Joseph Frey, of Ft. Worth, Texas; brother:  Kenneth Maddox of Muscle Shoals, Ala.; brother-in-law and wife, Gerald and Marcie Farren of Washington; several nieces and nephews; and a very special friend, Harold Barber of Matthews, Ala.
Mr. Maddox, Master Sergeant with the US Air Force Reserves, was retired after 41 years of devoted service.  He was initiated an Entered Apprentice in 1956, passed to Degree of Fellow Craft  and raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason before serving as Worshipful Master of Air Force One Lodge No. 889, F &AM during the Masonic year 1962-1963.  He received his Grand Lodge 50 year award of gold in June 2006.
A project dear to his heart, of which he was extremely instrumental in its success in the Montgomery area, was VITA, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, through AARP.
Memorial services were held Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009 at 3 p.m. from the Chapel of Leak-Memory Funeral Home in Montgomery with visitation one hour prior.  Entombment services in Troy on Sunday, March 1, 2009 at 11 a.m. from the Green Hills Mausoleum Chapel with visitation one hour prior. Memorials, in lieu of flowers, may be made to Troy Health and Rehab, 515 AL Hwy 87, Troy, AL 36079. Green Hills Funeral Home is honored to serve the Maddox Family.
