Rain couldn’t ruin the Trojans day on Saturday. The Troy Trojans softball team grabbed its third tournament title in four tries on Saturday when they won the Trojans Softball Classic.

Troy (14-5) defeated the Southeastern Louisiana Lions (7-5) in the final game by run-rule to clinch the hardware, 9-1.

“Obviously I feel real good right now,” Trojans head coach Melanie Davis said. “First of all I thought that game was a good experience for our team because it stayed tight. We had to play out of tough situations, and that was good for our kids. We need those type experiences. I was also really pleased that we could blow it open late and take charge too.”

The Trojans and Lions kept a one run game going until the Trojans took charge in the fifth inning by adding six runs.

Troy led 8-1 heading into the sixth, and the Trojans added a game-sealing run in the sixth for the title.

“We’re swinging the bats well, and our pitching has done extremely well over the weekend,” Davis said. “We still have a lot of things to work on though before we head to the Florida State tournament next weekend.”

Ashlyn Williams started the Southeastern Louisiana game for Troy. Williams threw all six innings, striking out nine and allowed just three hits.

Heidi Johnson led the Trojans at the plate with two home runs in the game. Sarah Harris, Nikki Hollett and Tasha Elmore all three knocked doubles in the game for Troy.

“The way we were able to hit with power from the three spot to the seven spot in the lineup makes you feel good about things,” Davis said. “Good things are happening for us. We had a balance of swings through the lineup this weekend.”

The Trojans first game of the day featured a re-match with Appalachian State.

Troy took charge in that game early with four runs in the second inning.

Allison Moore got the nod on the mound against the Mountaineers(4-7). Moore pitched five innings and struck out five. Moore allowed three hits and no runs in her outing.

Monique Faul got her second appearance of the season in relief of Moore, and Faul finished off the game. Faul struck out one and gave up a run in her two innings pitched.

“It’s a great accomplishment,” Davis said. “Our girls have been in four tournaments and we have won three championships. I have already challenged them to win the fourth title next week at Florida State.”
