Miles Hoyle did something he has never done in his baseball career Saturday at Riddle-Pace Field.

The Troy Trojans (5-2) unloaded on the Memphis Tigers for 19 runs on 25 hits Saturday afternoon in a 19-3 victory, but Hoyle was the center of attention, as he hit for the cycle and had five RBIs and three runs scored.

“It was a lot of fun to come out here and have everybody swing the bats well after a tough loss last night,” Hoyle said. “Sometimes you are hot and sometimes you are cold and today I had a good day. I was seeing it good. I didn’t even know I had it until I got to third and everybody was yelling and coach (Mark) Smartt said ‘Congratulations, you just hit for the cycle.’”

Hoyle was 4-for-6 on the day and recorded a home run, double, triple and a single in his last at-bat for the cycle.

“We are happy for him,” Troy head coach Bobby Pierce said. “You know how hard it is to go for the cycle. I know I haven’t had a guy hit for the cycle in seven years here at Troy. It is awfully hard to do it, but Miles is that kind of guy that could get it done. It was a great day to witness the Trojan offense.”

The Trojans took out Memphis in grand fashion just one day removed from losing their home opener 7-5. In Friday’s loss, the Trojans rallied from down 7-0 in the ninth inning with two outs.

“We certainly brought some momentum into today with that rally,” Troy head coach Bobby Pierce said. “It was great to see our guys swinging the bat like that. I think we have a chance to have a good offense. I am very happy with how our kids responded today.”

Hoyle gave Troy an early 4-0 lead when he crushed a ball over the left field fence for a three-run home run in the second inning after grounding into a fielder’s choice in his first at-bat.

The Trojans scored six runs in the inning, as Hoyle knocked in Steven Rosado and Bart Pettus. Pettus reached on an RBI single, scoring J.R. Myers.

After Hoyle’s bomb, Michael Precise reached on a single and scored on a home run by Ryan Ditthardt, who was a triple away from a cycle as well.

Hoyle recorded a double to score Brett Henry and Pettus in the third inning. He scored on a Precise double. Charley Williams also scored in the inning and Troy held a 10-0 lead at the end of three innings.

Memphis got on the board in the top of the fifth inning when Shawn Ablett walked and scored on a double by Tyler Huelsing.

Hoyle led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly from Precise. Precise, Myers and Williams also scored in the inning for a 14-0 Trojan lead.

Troy added three runs in the sixth inning, as Rosado led off with a solo home run and Ditthardt and Stephen Felix both scored.

Hoyle notched the cycle in the seventh inning when he singled. Precise knocked in Rosado with a single in the inning for an 18-1 Troy advantage. Troy scored its final run when Shohei Fujita doubled to open the eighth and Zach Martin hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Fujita.

Memphis scored two in the top of the ninth on a home run by Heith Hatfield.

Jason Walls picked up the win for the Trojans, allowing one unearned run on three hits in six innings of work. He struck out three batters and walked two.

“I really liked how Jason responded to his tough outing last week,” Pierce said. “He was all business throughout the week and he was determined to come out and pitch well. After last night’s loss, his effort could not have come at a better time.”

Walls was happy to get the win for his team.

“We had a tough loss yesterday and I just had to come out and give us an opportunity to win,” Walls said.

It did not hurt to have the support on the offensive side that Walls had Saturday.

“That made things so much easier,” he said. “We have a good club and I know what they are capable of. I love it.”

Jeff Green threw two innings in relief, allowing zero runs on one hit and striking out three.

Jason Howell allowed two runs on one hit and walked one batter.

Every Troy starter got at least one hit and scored at least one run in the victory.

The Trojans are back in action today at 1 p.m. in the rubber game from Riddle-Pace Field.

The winner of that game takes the series.
