Leroy Hunter Sr.
Funeral services for Leroy Hunter Sr. will be held on Friday, Feb. 27, 2009 at 11 a.m. at First Missionary Baptist Church, Troy, Ala., with Rev. George Gilchrist, Jr. officiating and George F. Grubbs Funeral Home directing.
Visitation will be Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at George F. Grubbs Funeral Home.
Committal and interment will be held at Elmwood Cemetery, Birmingham, Ala. Repass will be held at Mount Mariah Missionary Baptist Church, Birmingham, Ala.
Leroy Hunter Sr. was born Oct. 26, 1914 to Boykin and Mary Hunter in Dallas County, Ala.
He was the third of five children.
He confessed Christ at an early age.
He later joined Friendly Baptist Church in Birmingham, Ala.
After moving to Goshen, Ala., he joined First Missionary Baptist Church in Troy, Ala.
He completed his secondary education at the Dallas County Street Manual Training School.
He then moved to Birmingham, Ala. where he was employed by United States Steel for 35 years. During his employment there, he was able to advance to train conductor and later to engineer.
He was united in marriage to the late Alberta Richardson.
To this union, four children were born. He was preceded in death by his parents, Boykin and Mary Hunter, his brother, George Hunter, his sister, Abbie Shields, and one grandson, Zackary Hunter.
On Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2009, Brother Leroy Hunter Sr. made his transition from labor to reward.
He leaves to cherish his loving and comical spirit: one daughter, Hassie (Dan) Green, Goshen, Ala.; three sons, David (Rose) Hunter, Birmingham, Ala., Leroy Jr. (Beatrice) Hunter, Goshen, Ala., and Charles (Gloria) Hunter, Knoxville, Ala.; one brother, Boykin Hunter Sr., Birmingham, Ala.; one sister, Rachael Haynes, New York, N.Y.; one brother-in-law, Lee A. (Vergie) Richardson, San Antonio, Texas; one sister-in-law, Lula Garrett, Mobile, Ala.; 17 grandchildren; 39 great grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
