The 67th Annual Pike County Steer and Heifer Show will be at 6 p.m. Saturday at Cattleman Park. Admission is free and the public is encouraged to come out and support the young people as they compete for Grand Champion and Reserve Champion honors, said Tammy Powell, Pike County Extension coordinator.

“We have 11 4H and FFA members from around the county who will compete in this year’s steer and heifer show,” Powell said. “These young people, along with their families, have worked many months toward this show. We appreciate their commitment and dedication and look forward to the show.”

Junior and senior showmanship awards will be presented as well as awards for best average daily rate of gain and best native calf.

“The best average daily rate of gain is not for the calf that has gained the most weight,” Powell said. “It’s for the most efficient use of food. The best native calf is the best calf that was born and breed in Pike County. We also give an award for the best record book and we have some outstanding record books this year. I’m proud that I’m not a judge.”

Powell said parents who think they might want their children to be involved in the Pike County Steer and Heifer show are encouraged to come out Saturday and see, first hand, what the program is all about. “The weigh-in for the calves begins at 1 p.m. at Cattleman Park, and we invite everyone to come out and watch as the young people and their families get their calves ready for the show,” Powell said.

“A lot is involved, and it’s interesting to see what all goes on behind the scenes.” Powell said the participating young “cattlemen and cattlewomen” are the future of the cattle business and are deserving of the community’s support. “We appreciate the support of the Pike County Cattlemen and Cattlewomen associations,” she said.

“They are always willing to do anything necessary to make the annual Pike County Steer and Heifer Show a success and fun for everyone.”
