Nothing’s been decided yet, but the Troy City Council may have found someone to purchase the building that formerly served as the National Army Reserve Center on Elba Highway.

Before the council meeting Tuesday, Troy City Schools Superintendent Linda Felton-Smith officially requested the city convey a portion of that property for the purpose of a new Central Office.

“I’m here soliciting your support and your help,” Felton-Smith said.

The plans to build a new board of education building have been in the works for some time and were approved as part of the school system’s capital plans.

Felton-Smith said the building is already funded through bond money that hasn’t been used.

“We really need a central office. I would love to see Troy City Schools with a home,” Felton-Smith said. “And that’s a good location.”

The council members said they would consider her proposal and address it in a future meeting.

Also in their meeting, the council approved the purchase of a new computer system, which could mean more services for Troy residents and more savings for the city.

After months of research, City Clerk Alton Starling recommended the city contract with Tyler Technologies to purchase a new system that would place all of the city offices on one server.

Starling said this system would allow for more updated features and save money on maintenance and upkeep costs in the long run.

The bid came in at $300,328, but Troy Mayor Jimmy Lunsford said they would only have to pay about $50,000 of that up front. The system will be implemented in five phases, and they hope to have it completed before January 2011.

Lunsford said this could make bill paying easier for residents and free up employees to do some other needed services. “We’ve got to make a change,” Lunsford said. “We’re not satisfied with the support we have now.”
