Janet Motes used the words, “pleasantly surprised” to describe her reaction to the “giving spirit” at the 2009 Mardi Gras Gala to benefit the Colley Senior Complex Saturday night at Cattleman Park.

However, the Complex director, could just have easily used the word, “shocked.”

“I could not believe that, in these very difficult economic times, people would be so generous in their giving,” Motes said. “The total amount of money raised for the 2009 Mardi Gras Gala was $29,728. That was the most that has been raised since I came on board. It was just incredible.”

“This year’s support further demonstrates that the community is behind us and is convinced that what we do at the Colley Senior Complex is important,” Motes said.

The funds raised by the Mardi Gras Gala and silent auction make up about 70 percent of the Colley Senior Complex’s program budget.

“The other 30 percent of what we budget for programs comes from other fundraisers, donations and the funds that we get from the Pike County Commission,” Motes said. “The city of Troy pays our capital costs and we are very appreciative of the support that we get from the city, the community and these agencies.”

Motes also expressed appreciation to Troy Health and Rehabilitation Center, Troy University and Pfizer Pharmaceutical for monetary contributions and to Horn Beverage for its continuing support.

“And, we have to thank the seven Krewes and the 130 people who made up those Krewes,” Motes said. “They raised a huge portion of the 29,000-plus dollars. And we want to congratulate Ira and Mert Thompson on being crowned our 2009 Mardi Gras King and Queen.”

The Gala’s silent auction netted $9,000 for the Complex which is included in the total amount raised.

Motes said the funds from the Mardi Gras Gala will go a long way in funding the many programs at the Colley Senior Complex.
