The opening game of the 8th Annual Terry Sikes Memorial Tournament looked more like a football game than the Charles Henderson Trojans home opener on the baseball diamond.

The Trojans (3-1) took out Dothan 14-13 in the bottom of the seventh inning and head coach Derek Irons was happy to get the win.

“We will take a win any way we can get it,” Irons said. “We talked about fighting back through adversity and continuing to compete no matter what the circumstance and there were several chances where we could have laid down and gotten beat. So that is a positive to take away from this.”

Charles Henderson allowed five runs in the top of the fifth inning, as Dothan grabbed an 11-6 lead, but the Trojans fought back and scored six runs in the sixth inning to take a 13-11 lead.

“They had the big inning in the fifth and that put our backs against the wall, but we chipped away and got one run in the bottom of the inning and then had good at-bats in the sixth.”

K.D. Edenfield doubled to open the inning and scored the first run. Dario Rouse, Daniel Hartley, Nathan Barron, Mitch McLeod and Wesley Hayes all scored in the inning.

Dothan tied the score in the of the seventh, but Jared Rogers put down a sacrifice bunt and Chap Swindall scored on an error by the pitcher to seal the victory for CHHS.

Rouse led the Trojans, going 3-for-3 at the plate with a double, two runs scored and one RBI. Hartley was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. McLeod was 3-for-4 with a triple and three runs scored. Hayes and Chance Shaver each had one hit and Hayes’ hit was a three-run home run.

Rogers picked up the win on the mound, throwing one inning and allowing two runs on one hit and striking out two.

The Trojans dispatched of Northview 10-0 in five innings in the second game Thursday. Jake Smith went the distance for a complete game shutout. He allowed two hits and struck out eight batters.

Rogers had a double, two hits, three RBIs and one run scored. Smith had two hits and one run scored. Edenfield and Rouse had two runs scored and Hayes and Hartley each scored one run. Parker Sanders had three RBIs.

Charles Henderson faces Paul W. Bryant at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, but Dothan squares off with Paul W. Bryant today at 4:30 p.m. and Northview faces Bryant at 7 p.m.

The championship game of the tournament will be Saturday at 5 p.m.
