The Troy University Long School of Music and the Troy Arts Council will present its 11th annual Brass Symposium Concert at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21, at the Claudia Crosby Theater on the campus of Troy University.

Dr. James Zingara, professor of trumpet at Troy University, said the concert is the culmination of the activities involved with the Troy University Brass Symposium, which is a full day of clinics for middle and high school and college level students.

The evening performance will feature performances by Zingara, Dr. Dough Briston, professor of trombone at Alabama State University; Jeff Leenhouts, principal hornist of the Pensacola and Mobile symphonies; and Michael Keeley, adjunct instructor of trumpet at Troy University.

Sophie Wang will be the pianist for the concert.

In addition the Troy University Trumpet Ensembles I and II, the Southeast Alabama Brass Company, the Troy Symphony Brass Quintet and several honors ensembles made up of area high school students will perform.

The newly formed Bones of Troy, a trombone ensemble, will also perform.

The concert will feature a variety of music, including chamber music and contemporary pieces.

“The concert will offer the ceremony, scope and variety of a typical band concert and will conclude with a spectacular mass finale of ‘Ode to Joy’ comprised of about 150 performers,” Zingara said.

The day’s activities will begin at 8 a.m. when about 70 of the area’s best middle and high school trumpet players will convene for classes taught by Zingara and the guest clinicians.

“The students will prepare one or two pieces to be played at the Troy University Brass Ensemble Showcase concert, which will be at 1 p.m. in HAL Hall,” Zingara said.

“We won’t know what pieces they will play until Saturday when they are placed in groups according to their levels of performance.”

Admission to both concerts is free and both are open to the public.
