Which way will we grow?

It’s a simple question that yields a complicated answer.

Luckily, Troy residents can have some input on the decision ahead, if they take the time to participate in an upcoming public hearing on Feb. 26.

Consultants working a comprehensive plan for the city are seeking input on ways to alleviate traffic along George Wallace Drive, particularly in the area of Troy University.

Although city officials say they have no official traffic study numbers to reference, they do know congestion is an issue, particularly at peak times of the day and during major events at the university.

But rerouting traffic isn’t a simple process.

Options being proposed include the construction of a new connector road between Elm Street and U.S. 231, perhaps built east of Franklin Street. Details are sketchy, particularly as relates to how this major project would be funded,

Other considerations include redirecting traffic towards Park Street, Brundidge and North Three Notch, but that plan has its challenges, as well.

Ultimately, traffic flow will need to be addressed. But how to best reroute the flow, how to fund it, and how to build community support remain unanswered.

We strongly urge Troy residents to invest the time in attending the public hearing on Feb. 26 at the Troy Recreation Center. It’s your chance to have a say in how our community will grow.
