Trojans escape

MONROE, La. — Brandon Hazzard hit a three-pointer with 31 seconds remaining to give the Trojans a two-point lead and eventual 71-70 win over ULM on Saturday afternoon in Sun Belt action at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.

Troy (9-10, 4-3 SBC) got the lead back when Richard Delk got a pass from Jervis down low and got two points, resulting in a one-point Trojans lead, 66-65. After two from Malcolm Thomas, Delk missed the front end of a bonus opportunity.

On the next possession, Tom Jervis drew a foul and a turnover giving Troy the ball with 50 seconds remaining. After a tough defensive possession, Hazzard was able to hit the three-pointer for a two-point Troy lead, 69-67. Hazzard finished the game with a team-high 13 points and Delk scored 12 points with five rebounds.

The Trojans then forced a turnover and ULM was forced to foul Vogler, sending the junior point guard to the line for two shots. Vogler drained both free throws making it a two possession game.

ULM had 15 seconds left and the ball, but with one second left on the clock Gilbert drained a three cutting Troy’s lead to 71-70. Troy was able to get the ball into Vogler as time expired.

The win moved Troy to 4-3 in the Sun Belt Conference tying its conference start since joining the Sun Belt. The Trojans shot 47 percent from the field and from beyond the arc. They also hit 12-of-16 free throws.

Brandon Hazzard opened up the scoring for both teams with a three-pointer from the left corner giving the Trojans a 3-0 lead.

Tom Jervis got an offensive rebound and a put back to cap a 9-0 Troy run over the first 3:30 of the game. ULM missed their first eight shots until Malcolm Thomas found the bottom of the net on a three-pointer with 15:37 remaining. Jervis blocked six shots and grabbed eight rebounds.

Thomas’ three started a 7-0 ULM run, but Richard Delk got two to go down low to break the run with the Trojans on top 11-7.

Kenny Ware kept his hot shooting from Thursday going by nailing his first attempt from deep off a Mario Telfair screen and then added another just 49 seconds later to give Troy a 19-15 advantage with 11:26 remaining in the first half. Ware finished with three three-pointers and nine points.

Dynile Forbes hit a three from the corner and following a Hazzard turnover, Kenneth Averette picked up a fast break lay-up to give ULM their first lead, 22-21 with 9:35 to go in the opening frame.

Vogler sank a pair of free throws with just less than four minutes on the clock and Regis Huddleston hit his first three from the corner to cut into the ULM advantage, 34-30. Josh Williams picked up a rebound on defense and then pulled up in transition with a three-pointer to cut into the lead again.

Huddleston hit another three off a dish from Williams to leave the Trojans with a four-point deficit at halftime, 40-36. Hazzard led Troy in first half scoring with seven points, while Thomas and Forbes both scored 10 points for ULM.

Antywan Jones pulled up for a jumper off the elbow for the first points of the second half, and after a lay-up by Delk the game was tied at 40 just 45 seconds into the half.

Hazzard hit his second three-pointer of the night and Jervis tied the game on a jump hook in the paint next time down. After surrendering a put-back to ULM, Vogler tied the game with a pair from the charity stripe with 13:41 remaining.

Telfair sank two free throws with 12:04 to go to tie the game again, this time at 51-51. Thomas answered with a three, but Telfair came right back with two in the lane.

The senior from St. Petersburg, Fla. gave Troy their first lead since early in the first half, 58-57 with 8:42 left.

The Warhawks jumped back into the lead with a Gilbert three-pointer, but Telfair backed Gilbert down on the subsequent trip to force another tie, 60-60.

Forbes broke the tie on an alley-oop slam, but Delk kept the teams tied with a put-back off a Telfair miss.

Thomas found a loose ball and drained a 15-foot jumper, but Delk again got an offensive rebound and scored leaving it even.

Thomas led ULM with 20 points and Gilbert scored 17 with 11 rebounds. Forbes added 15 points.

The Trojans host New Orleans Thursday beginning at 7 p.m.
