The Pike County Bulldogs grabbed a weekend split with a victory over Booker T. Washington Saturday, but a loss to area foe Abbeville Friday night.

The Bulldogs (10-5, 1-1 AHSAA Class 3A, Area 4) were on the road for both games and capped the weekend with a 59-36 shellacking of Washington.

“They were a real big team down low, but our guys did a real good job of running the trap in the first quarter,” PCHS head coach Doug Holland said. “And our post guys did a terrific job all night.”

Pike County jumped out to an eight-point lead in the first half and with both of Washington’s big man fouled out the Bulldogs put the pressure on in the second half and put the game out of reach.

“We went to a man-to-man defense in the second half and that sealed the win for us,” Holland said.

Quay Bailey led the charge for the Bulldogs with 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Tevin Andrews contributed 14 points, nine rebounds and six assists to the win. Deandre Mathis chipped in nine points and five rebounds. Martellis Foster added six points and three rebounds. Kendrick Jackson had two points, but 10 rebounds on the night.

Holland said the team received a huge boost from Jarrod Wilson who scored 11 points and had five rebounds.

The Bulldogs fell hard to the Abbeville Yellowjackets Friday, 73-42. Bailey led the team with 12 points and Andrews added 11 points.

PCHS only trailed 29-22 at the half, but Holland said the team fell apart in the second half and was outscored 44-20.

The Lady Bulldogs lost both games by large margins. The B team boys also lost both games Friday and Saturday.
