The Pike Liberal Arts Patriots Varsity teams both dropped games on Friday night, but on Saturday afternoon both responded to get back on a winning note.

The Patriots faced Lee-Scott Academy at home Friday night.

The girls’ game was a battle until the closing seconds when Lee-Scott took the lead and the win 38-37.

“I thought we played hard tonight,” girls head coach Steven Kilcrease said. “Defensively we played well. Our offense didn’t execute well at times.”

The Lady Patriots led 37-36 with seconds left in the game.

The Warriors punched in a basket with eight seconds left on the clock.

The Patriots threw the ball away on a pass in the ensuing possession, and Lee-Scott ran out the remaining 2.1 seconds of the game.

“We played hard,” Kilcrease said. “I was proud of them. We have got to have somebody step up in crunch time like they had. That’s the team we’ve got to bet to win the championship, and now we know we’re capable of doing it.”

The boys’ game had a different tone than the girls’.

Lee-Scott defeated the Patriots 60-41.

“Lee-Scott has a good ball team,” Patriots head coach Mike Barbaree said. “Give them a lot of credit. The positive is that we did a good job on the boards tonight and on our half court offense and defense.”

Justin McLaughlin led the charge with 22 points and nine rebounds. Douglas Hawkins added five points. Ross Hixon and Nick McLaughlin added four points each, and McLaughlin also had six rebounds.

The Patriots faced Dixie Academy on Saturday, and the outcome for both teams was more to their delight.

The boys’ team grabbed a win 65-41.

Justin McLaughin again led the scoring for the Patriots with 12 points. Douglas Hawkins added 10 points and Jared Henderson sank nine.

Coach Mike Barbaree said there was a big difference between Friday’s game and Saturday’s.

“Turnovers,” Barbaree said. “Five today and 19 yesterday. We played with a lot of confidence today.”

The Patriots hit seven of 19 three-pointers and 18 of 31 field goals totaling at 50 percent shooting for the game.

The girls’ team defeated Dixie 49-22 with a double-double performance from Rebecca Farrar.

Farrar posted 17 points and 11 rebounds in the game. Josie Griffin added seven points.

“I thought we played well,” Kilcrease said.

The Lady Patriots led Dixie 31-3 at the end of the first half, and that proved to be the difference in the game.

The girls’ overall record comes to 5-2 after the weekend’s games. Their region record is now 2-2.

The boys’ record now stands at 3-4 with a 1-3 region record.

All of the Patriots basketball teams will face Lakeside Academy on the road next Friday.
