George Lamar Collier, 82, of Montgomery, departed this life Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008, at Jackson Hospital in Montgomery. Graveside services will be held at Evergreen Cemetery of Elba at 2:30 p.m. today with the Rev. Mart Gray officiating. Visitation will be at Hayes Funeral Home from 1 to 2:30 p.m. today.
The Collier family request that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to The Caring Center, First Baptist Church of Montgomery, 305 South Perry Street, Montgomery, AL 36104.
Mr Collier was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years Mary Florence (Poncy) Collier.
George Collier was born in Elba on July 5, 1926. He was a graduate of Auburn University and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was employed at Dorsey Trailers in 1949 and served as President from 1959 until his retirement in 1987.
He was President of the Truck – Trailers Manufactures Association Vice-president of Constar international, a Board member of Alabama Trucking Association and the Elba Exchange Bank. He was a member of the Montgomery First Baptist Church and Poundstone Sunday School Class.
Survivors include Daughter, Mary Mims (Bruce) of Cape Girardeau, Mo.; son, George Clive Collier (Lori) of Minden, La.; son, Samuel Claude Collier (Jackie) of Kennesaw, Ga.; a son, John Brock Collier (Beth) of Troy; granddaughter, Holley Aplin (George) of Millstadt, Ill.; grandson, Schuyler Collier of Minden, La.; granddaughter, Caroline Roy (Justine) of Monroe, La.; grandson, Seth Collier of Minden; granddaughter, Katherine Collier of Kennesaw, Ga.; granddaughter, Elizabeth Collier of Kennesaw,; grandson, Brock Collier of Troy; grandson, Sam Collier of Troy; great-Grandson, Jerry Collier Aplin of Millstadt, Ill.; great-Granddaughter, Bree Anne Aplin of Millstadt; and a brother, Sam Collier of Birmingham.
Pallbears are George Clive Collier, Samuel Claude Collier, John Brock Collier, Bruce Wendell Mims, George Drummond Aplin, Schuyler Logan Collier, Seth Harris Collier, William Brock Collier and Sam Hixon Collier. Hayes Funeral Home of Elba, Alabama is serving the Collier family.
