There were only a few provisional ballots that counted in the District 6 race, but it was enough to put Karen Berry in office — at least for now.

With just nine valid provisional ballots in the district, Republican Berry is leading her Democrat opponent Oren Fannin by six votes, 1,391 to 1,385.

Three of the provisional ballots opened Wednesday contained votes for Fannin. Six ballots went to Berry.

But, the margin in the race is still close enough to require a mandatory recount, which is scheduled for Monday.

Even still, Fannin said he plans to file an election contest if he is not victorious in the recount.

“This phase is over. I’m not conceding,” Fannin said, after provisional ballots were tallied.

Though the race isn’t technically over, Berry has been sworn in as the District 6 commissioner, which she is legally allowed to do, and she sat in on the first meeting Wednesday.

“It was a good race,” Berry said. “I want to thank my family, friends and supporters who have been with me, and I look forward to doing my best for the people of District 6.”

Fannin said he is thankful for all the support he has been given throughout the whole race.

“I really am very thankful for all the people that supported me,” Fannin said.

The election will be canvassed Friday, and the recount will begin at 8:30 a.m. Monday.

Other provisional ballots were not enough to change the outcome of any other local races.

All the county commissioners were sworn in prior to their first meeting Wednesday.
