“Six and 0 and two to go,” shouted the Brundidge JV recreation football team after their Monday night game. They had just finished their final regular season game with a big victory over cross-county rival Troy.

Brundidge won 26-7, and the two teams happen to face each other in the opening round of the playoffs.

“I feel good right now,” Eligha Lampley said. “We’re ready to beat them again.”

Brundidge is looking forward to their rematch on Monday with Troy.

“My team was playing good tonight, and we played hard defense tonight,” Kamari Jackson said.

The boys in purple have enjoyed their season, but they all agree that it is not over until they win a Super Bowl.

“We’ve been having a lot of fun,” Jerrell Lawson said.

The team has not only learned a lot about each other, but they have learned fundamentals of the game and they know it all starts up front with the line.

“You got to snap the ball right first,” Trey Wilson said. “When you do that, you have to put people on their butt. We started blocking really well.”

The team credits their coaches with teaching them proper blocking techniques, and they agree that it is a big part of their success.

“Coach told us to get low at first then come up,” Keyotis Blakely said. “It worked. I didn’t think we would win that big. They were real good.”

The team also agreed that their successful play in the trenches led to the big win.

“The line played really good,” Jobe Johns said. “The D-line is the strongest part of the team.”

In the end the team relied on the play and leadership of backup quarterback Cody Henderson to finish after their starting quarterback was out with an early injury.

“I felt kind of nervous, but I think I did a pretty good job,” Henderson said. “I’m pretty excited about next week.”

Every player talked about how proud they were of their team, but Juhmir Lampley summed it up with a short phrase.

“We’re undefeated and we’re going to the playoffs,” Lampley said.

The Brundidge coaches talked about how much fun they have had with the team as well.

“It’s been a fun season,” head coach Markeith Blakely said. “These guys are easy to coach. They all listen well. They would run through a brick wall if we told them too. This group and the Peewee group coming up are going to bring the state championship back to Pike County (High School) one day.”
